It can, when the depth or the energy is wrong for the area or the setting is too strong for the skin type, and the clinician's plan for each zone is there to avoid that. Morpheus8 is a medical procedure: fine pins deliver radiofrequency heat below the skin, and set wrong, the heat can burn, scar, reduce fat where it is not wanted or injure a nerve. In October 2025 the US regulator, the FDA, said it was aware of reports of serious complications from radiofrequency microneedling, including burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage, with no rate published, and that these devices are for medical use, not home use. We go through this with every patient at the consultation.
What the safety data show
The published data on Morpheus8 show what careful settings achieve. A 2025 safety study of 364 foreheads, 364 eye areas, 353 mouth areas and 233 jawlines reported no darker or lighter patches (hyper- or hypopigmentation), scarring or prolonged redness. A 2020 study followed 247 patients treated on the lower face and neck with Morpheus8 and another radiofrequency device, and 93% were pleased with the result. Three patients (1.2%) had a temporary nerve weakness, and a small number had swelling lasting over six weeks or a hardened area; all of these resolved. The device is FDA-cleared in the US for dermatological procedures where coagulation (sealing by heat) or contraction of soft tissue is needed.
What decides the outcome
- Depth per zone. The pins go to a set depth: shallow over the forehead and around the eyes, deeper over the jowl and under the chin, up to 7 mm with the body tip. The clinician sets the depth for each zone of your face or body, not one depth for everything.
- Energy per zone. The same: lower over bone and thin skin, higher where there is tissue to contract.
- Skin type. At the higher energy levels the device is cleared in the US only for Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV, the pale to olive range. Darker skin can be treated at lower energy settings, and the clinician checks your skin at the consultation and tells you plainly what is safe for it.
- Fat. Radiofrequency heat remodels fat, which helps on the abdomen and the jowl and is unwanted on a thin temple, under the eye or on a slim face. We treat the face with the face tip at face depths, and if you are petite or worry about losing volume in the cheeks, say so; the plan changes.
- The things that rule it out. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, a pacemaker or implanted electronic device, or metal implants in the area. Isotretinoin in the last six months, or an active infection, cold sore, open wound or active cystic acne in the area. Keloid scarring, a bleeding disorder or blood thinners. Uncontrolled diabetes, an autoimmune condition affecting the skin, or immunosuppressant medicine. Dermal filler needs a four-week gap and threads three months. The clinician checks each at the free consultation.
What is normal, and what is not
Redness, swelling, grid marks for two to five days, dryness and some bruising on the body are the expected course and are covered on the downtime page. A burn, a blister, an area that stays numb or swelling that worsens after day two are not, and we want to hear the same day.
How we work
Our clinic is doctor-led. Every session is run by a trained clinician who sets the depth and the energy per zone, on a genuine InMode Morpheus8, and consultations and follow-up reviews are free. Our patients review the clinic on review.clinic, where Morpheus8 at our clinic holds 4.9 out of 5 from 66 reviews with 100% saying it was worth it (November 2026).
